 In 1865, as the cattle business began to boom, hat manufacturers became convinced that the cowmen of the West would find durable high quality felt, broad brimmed styled hats very useful in enduring the harsh weather conditions. A year later the "Hat of the West" or the now famous "Boss of the Plains" hat was born, complete with a high crown and a wide brim to protect the wearer when working in intense heat or bitter cold climates. A modified Boss of Plains called the Carlsbad commonly known as the “Gus hat” was made popular in the western mini-series Lonesome Dove. The Gus style brim was the same as the Boss of Plains, but the crown was shaped tall in the back and had a steep crease down the middle which allowed for cowmen to pick their hat up with ease. |
