Tombstone Cowboy Hats

In the old west it was said the shape of the crown of your hat indicated your political views. If you wore a flat top crown you favored conservative (republican) law-and-order, or Monarchist views. If you wore a rounded crown you favored democracy (Liberal/Democrat), individual freedoms, etc.
An example of these crowns can be found in old west films such as Tombstone. Val Kilmer’s character Doc Holliday in Tombstone styled his hat with a fedora type crown which would suggest status as well as level of education; finished with a bound edge brim shaped with the left side turned upwards to signify his unique personality. Wyatt Earp’s from Tombstone wears a style similar to the Boss of the Plains, with a bound edge flat brim and an open crown. Morgan Earp as well as Virgil Earp wore similar styles to Wyatt Earp, where Virgil wore a tall open crown with a raw edge turn down brim, and Morgan styled his hat almost identical to Wyatt’s with an open crown and a flat brim.
